Physics describes the universe through forces. Biology describes living systems through senses. These two vocabularies rarely meet. The connection between the physical forces that govern matter and the biological senses through which organisms experience the world has been a philosophical question, not a scientific one.
BFUT Paper 17 establishes a specific correspondence: each fundamental force corresponds to a fundamental sensing channel.
Gravity: The Sense of Presence
Gravity is the first force to emerge and the only one requiring no structural prerequisites beyond mass. It acts on every physical system with energy. It is universal, infinite in range, and unshieldable. The corresponding sense is presence - the most elementary form of physical coupling, through which all matter participates in the state of the universe around it. An atom in deep space is coupled to the gravitational field of every other mass in the observable universe. Gravity is the minimum sensing all matter possesses by virtue of having mass.
Strong Force: The Sense of Binding
The strong force operates at nuclear scales and is responsible for nuclear stability. The corresponding sense is structural binding - the capacity to form and maintain stable composite structures. Without strong-force channel access, no nuclear stability is possible, and without nuclear stability, no chemistry, no biology, no life.
Electromagnetism: The Sense of Identity and Distant State
Electromagnetism governs chemistry, light, and all biological sensing at the macroscopic level. Every sense organ in every living organism - eye, ear, skin, nose - ultimately operates through electromagnetic interactions. The corresponding sense is identity and distant state: the capacity to detect and communicate specific information about other systems at long range. Electromagnetic waves carry frequency, amplitude, polarisation, and phase - the richest information channel among the four forces.
Weak Force: The Sense of Transformation
The weak force mediates internal transformation - particles changing identity, metabolic processes, adaptive immunity. The corresponding sense is transformation - the capacity to undergo internal structural change in response to external conditions. This is the physical basis of metabolism and biological adaptation at the deepest level.
The implication: sensing is not a biological innovation that emerged from non-sensing matter. It is a property of matter's fundamental interaction structure, present from the moment the 3+e threshold was crossed and the first condensation formed. BFUT Paper 20 formalises this into a scientific framework with formal definitions and five confirmed predictions.
