Darwin's theory of evolution by natural selection is one of the most powerful scientific frameworks ever constructed. Every major prediction has been confirmed. But Darwinian selection does not explain the directionality of evolution — why complexity, sensing capability, and channel access consistently increase over geological time rather than varying randomly.
BFUT Paper 20 identifies the mechanism: the perpetuation drive, expressed through the HCA Law as channel expansion.
The Perpetuation Drive
The perpetuation drive is the most fundamental consequence of the free-energy minimum of Paper 16. A condensation at the free-energy minimum resists dissolution and actively responds to perturbations in ways that tend to restore the minimum. The condensation perpetuates itself. At the simplest level this is stability. At greater structural complexity — as condensations develop multi-channel coupling, feedback, and memory — the perpetuation drive becomes more sophisticated: seeking resources, avoiding threats, repairing damage, reproducing.
Channel Expansion as the Arrow of Complexity
The perpetuation drive provides the directionality that Darwinian selection lacks. Variation that increases channel access — that gives an organism access to a new sensing channel or deeper integration of existing channels — increases the organism's ability to perpetuate itself in a complex environment. Selection systematically favours channel-expanding variations not because "complexity is good" but because channel expansion materially advantages perpetuation.
The sequence follows the HCA hierarchy: gravitational channel access first (mass-responsive behaviour), strong-force channel (biochemical stability), electromagnetic channel (photoreception, chemoreception, communication), weak-force channel (metabolic transformation, adaptive immunity, internal state regulation). The evolutionary record confirms this sequence in the phylogenetic history of sensing capability acquisition.
Directed Manifestation

The perpetuation drive provides the directionality, the HCA Law provides the structural constraint, and the available opportunity field — specific environmental conditions — determines which channel expansions are currently accessible. Evolution is opportunity-responsive manifestation of channel-expanding forms, not blind combinatorial drift.
