The CI₀ results for the 100-species dataset include a finding that sounds provocative until you understand what CI₀ measures: bottlenose dolphins, common ravens, and chimpanzees all achieve CI₀ values exceeding the human average of 100.
This is exactly what the physics predicts, and it is what any honest comparison of sensory architecture should produce.
Why Dolphins Score High
Bottlenose dolphins have extraordinarily high sensory bandwidth. Their echolocation system is one of the most information-dense biological sensing systems known — processing ultrasonic signals with millisecond resolution across a three-dimensional field. They have large absolute brain mass with a highly convoluted cortex, high N, high connectivity K, and complex social communication. CI₀ reflects genuine structural richness. A formula that gave dolphins a lower score than the human average would be physically dishonest.
Human Exceptionalism Relocated
CI₀ measures structural capacity — the raw equipment. S measures structural effectiveness — how well the equipment is deployed. Human S = 1.0 is the finding that no other species achieves: minimal predation vulnerability (humans dominate every ecosystem), minimal environmental fragility (humans survive in deserts, arctic, and space), minimal disease susceptibility relative to complexity, maximum integration efficiency through language and culture.
Human exceptionalism is real. It resides in S = 1.0 — a structural achievement, not a biological accident. The fact that dolphins exceed human average CI₀ does not diminish human exceptionalism. It locates it correctly.
The Ethical Implication
The CI framework produces a result that is physically honest and ethically significant. Non-human animals are not consciousness-free entities. Dolphins, ravens, and chimpanzees have CI₀ values demonstrating genuine, physically grounded structural richness. A framework grounded in the physics of sensing cannot ignore this. How we treat species with high CI values should reflect the physical reality the formula reveals.
